UV Disinfection in Food & Beverage Production

Supporting water quality from treatment to the point of use

Water is essential to food and beverage production, both as an ingredient and as a resource for rinsing and other process operations. Consistent water quality helps protect product taste, appearance and production reliability. Microbiological control therefore needs to be considered throughout water treatment, storage and distribution.

As water moves through tanks and pipework, poor hygiene management can introduce contamination before it reaches the production line. An effective water treatment strategy combines appropriate pretreatment, a suitable disinfection stage and controlled downstream handling. UV disinfection can provide an additional barrier against target microorganisms within this wider approach.

UV treatment exposes water to ultraviolet light at a defined dose, inactivating susceptible microorganisms by damaging their genetic material. The UV stage does not require the addition of disinfectant chemicals, helping avoid taste or odour introduced by such dosing. Depending on the process design, UV can be evaluated for ingredient water, rinse water or other production water streams.

Reliable performance depends on matching the system to actual operating conditions. Peak flow, UV transmittance (UVT), water temperature, pressure and the target UV dose all affect selection. Suspended particles can shield microorganisms, so filtration and other pretreatment may be necessary. UV does not replace filtration or desalination, and downstream hygiene remains essential because UV provides no lasting disinfectant residual.

AGUA TOPONE offers industrial UV water treatment systems for different operating requirements. For a new production line or an existing installation, the reactor, controls and available monitoring or cleaning options should be assessed alongside the plant's water quality and maintenance needs.

No Disinfectant Dosing

Use a physical disinfection process while considering the sensory requirements of production water.

Process Integration

Position UV within a suitable treatment train and coordinate it with filtration and hygienic distribution.

Selection for Your Process
