ScaleDp scale inhibitors have been installed at a chemical production plant to address recurring scale deposits in evaporative condensers and improve the stability of its refrigeration system.
The plant required reliable low-temperature conditions for synthesis, fermentation and refining. Its open circulating spray-water systems were exposed to high-hardness makeup water, dust and trace process impurities. Deposits accumulated on heat exchange coils, nozzles, fill media and drift eliminators, impairing heat rejection. Elevated condenser pressure and frequent high-pressure alarms created shutdown risks and forced lower production loads.

Evaporative cooling makes water quality particularly important. As water evaporates during heat rejection, dissolved minerals remain in the circulating water and become increasingly concentrated. Without effective control, this concentration can encourage calcium carbonate scale formation. Maintaining cleaner heat exchange surfaces therefore helps preserve cooling efficiency and limit the energy penalty associated with fouling.
To address the problem, the plant installed ScaleDp units at the water inlets of multiple evaporative condensers, replacing its previous reliance on softened water for scale control.
ScaleDp uses DPSE physical water treatment technology, designed to influence the crystallization behavior of hardness minerals and reduce their tendency to form firmly attached deposits. Calcium and magnesium remain in the water; the treatment focuses on reducing scale adhesion rather than removing hardness. The devices operate without an external power supply and require no regeneration salt or continuous chemical dosing for the scale-control process. This approach reduces the consumables and routine handling associated with salt-based softening.

Following installation, condenser operation became more stable, with improved heat transfer, lower condenser pressure and reduced high-pressure alarm risk. The project results also describe lower energy consumption, reduced corrosion and less aging damage to coils, spray pipelines and fill media, helping reduce operating and maintenance costs.
These changes helped the cooling system meet production temperature requirements more reliably while reducing the burden of equipment upkeep.
For industrial operators considering a similar application, equipment selection starts with the actual site conditions. Makeup-water quality, circulating flow rate, pipe size and the cooling-system arrangement help determine a suitable ScaleDp configuration. Distributors, contractors and plant engineering teams can share these details with ScaleDp for project evaluation and technical support.
